DIY Healthier Croutons! What do you do with old bread? Throw it out? Repurpose it? When my homemade bread is getting a bit stale, I love to use it for french toast, DIY bread crumbs, bread pudding, or homemade croutons! Read on for my DIY crouton recipe!
I made these croutons with my old sourdough bread (sourdough croutons taste amazing!), but any bread that’s getting old should work! Even gluten free will work just fine. The sourdough crust on my bread was so hard (like rock hard), but these still turned out perfect! I hope you’ll give it a try. The flavor options for homemade croutons are endless!
Here’s the recipe:
2 cups stale bread, chopped or torn into bite sized pieces
3 TBS olive oil
1/4 tsp garlic salt
1 tsp italian seasoning
2 TBS Parmesan cheese (optional for those who eat dairy)
Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 350.
Combine bread pieces, olive oil, garlic salt and Italian seasoning in a large bowl and mix until fully combined.
Spread bread pieces out on a tray and bake for 15-25 minutes (depends how hard the bread is you’re using). Wait until they’re crispy, but not burnt.
Enjoy over a fresh salad, soup, or in a casserole! Store at room temperature in an airtight container for several days or freeze for future use!
The fun thing about this recipe is how versatile it is. You can use olive oil or any other oil (melted coconut oil, avocado oil, etc.) or melted butter! You can also add any seasonings you wish or even use fresh garlic. If you’re gluten free, use gluten free bread!
